(00 I 75 Years Ago May, 1882 Rev. Tucker of Decatur organized a Presbyterian Church at Bridgeport Sunday with eleven members, only three of whom were males. At last, it is said, the speaking through long distance over telephone has been discovered. Telephoning has up to this time been confined to short circuits, and its use has, therefore, been limited, but with the new invention there is no difficulty of a person in New York conversing with a friend in Boston or Cincinnati.
Our sister town, Aurora, had a $4000 fire last week. A new post office called Anneville has been established in Wise County. Thomas Forgy of Aurora, while on Walnut Creek in Parker ty, one day this week got kicked on the head by a horse, so he died and his body was intered in the Aurora cemetery. L. M.
Southern presented us with a cabbage head the other day which measured 30 inches around and weighed six pounds. The town of Chico is now claiming to have as good- a mineral well as the wells in Jack or Palo Pinto counties. Leslie, of Alvord, left Saturday morning for Pecos City to take charge of 2100 head of cattle he recently purchased there. He will load the herd and have them moved to Amarillo, from which place he will drive them overland to his ranch in Sherman County. Chico has two light cases of smallpox, Jess Lawrence and Miss Lula Short. Both cases are at Mrs. Lawrences, under strict quarantine.
A bill has been passed by the legislature and signed by the governor making it a violation to misrepresent in the selling of nursery stock, and the party so offending is subject to a fine of from $100 to $500. The storm houses in Decatur have received considerable patronage this week. It is a small cloud indeed that can't drive the average Decaturites underground. A tap pipeline of the Texas Oil Company has recently been run through this county. The line enters from the north and runs east of town about four miles, going into Dallas.
It is a tap of the Henrietta system of pipelines. County Surveyor Devereux of Decatur assisted the company's engineers in the work in Wise 25 Years Ago County. May, 1932 Mayor P. B. Baits made an appeal to the citizens of Decatur to stop throwing trash, grass cuttings, in the street gutters.
We have noticed several places lately where grass raked out in the gutter has caused water to run down the center of the street, said the Mayor. Jack Enoch, 17, of Greenwood Chapter of Future Farmers defeated representatives speakers from the Chico, Alvord and Decatur chapters with his speech on "Equalization of Taxes as a Farm Relief Measure," to win the Wise County Future Farmer Public Speaking contest, Wednesday night. The contest was held at the Methodist Church in Decatur. "Swinging in a Grapevine Swing" seems to be the song in the air since announcement of the big celebration to be held in Grapevine, May 19, to mark the opening of the Northwest Highway, Dallas to Rhome. Hugh Breedlove was hostess Thursday afternoon to the Worthwhile Club at her home on South Trinity. Monday afternoon she entertained in a social meeting the ladies of the Christian Church Missionary Society. Billy Green will open up a grocery and dry goods store combined Friday, in Paradise. W. C. Shults, Mrs. Oma Cartwright, Miss Bell Ford and W. P.
Thurmond were in Cottonwood Friday night attending the closing of the school. Mr. Shults made the address. While there, a rain storm prevented them from coming home. They found shelter for the night in Balsora at the hospitable home of Miss Emma Miller.
