Duke basketball's current 2024-25 roster and what could be next for Blue Devils. College basketball's transfer portal closed Wednesday, meaning players no longer have the option to leave their current school and play immediately elsewhere.

The transfer portal permits student athletes to place their name in an online database declaring their desire to transfer.

With 4,602 total men's scholarships up for grabs across 354 current programs, and accounting for about three departing players every season, there are roughly 1,150 men's basketball scholarships available for aspiring collegiate players in any given year.

Until NCAA rules change — or until college athletes become employees who can sign multi-year contracts, with consequences for breaking them — roster rebuilding is going to be an every-offseason thing. The COVID year cycling out matters, too.

According to the NCAA, once a student-athlete enters the transfer portal, their current institution has the ability to cancel or reduce their scholarship for the upcoming academic year. This means that a student-athlete may indeed lose their scholarship if they decide to enter the transfer portal.

If you are currently receiving financial aid of any type, make sure you're aware of the terms. If you are on an athletic scholarship when you enter the Transfer Portal and do not get picked up by another school, your scholarship status could be at risk as early as the following term.

The transfer portal is an NCAA database in which players who have opted to transfer are listed. Those with access to the portal include coaches, athletic administrators and compliance officials.
